Dr Annemarie Matthess is an agricultural economist graduated from Hohenheim University in Germany.

She has over 25 years’ work experience as GIZ resident advisor and project manager in Africa with

focus on rural development, innovation systems, research management and private sector development

in agriculture. As Senior Planning Officer at GIZ-HQ Division Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, she

supported from 2005 to 2009 programs in Africa, Latin America and Central Asia in concept and capacity

development and during evaluations related to value chain promotion, strengthening of professional organizations in agriculture and agricultural innovation systems. She contributed to the GIZ-ValueLinks Manual and trained GIZ- and partner staff on this methodology for value chain promotion. Since 2009 she coordinates the regional Programme Sustainable Smallholder Agri-Business (SSAB) operating in Cameroun, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo. In this role she has developed with her team and partners the Farmer Business School Approach and coordinated the scaling-up to over 300,000 producers. From 2012 to 2015 she was elected spokeswoman of the GIZ Sector Network Rural Development Africa. Since 2015 she coordinates - inaddition to SSAB - , the implementation of the Nigeria country Module of the Global Programme “Green Innovation Centers for the Agriculture and Food Sector”.
